Tasting Notes

The 2007 Sammarco is a showstopper. A dazzling bouquet leads to layers of rich dark fruit in this superb, racy wine. The tannins are all about finesse. This isn’t a blockbuster Sammarco, but rather it is a wine that impresses for its sexy personality and fabulous overall balance. The 2007 Sammarco is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Sangiovese and 5% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.

This is a stunning set of wines from Castello di Rampolla. The 2007s are some of the finest wines I have ever tasted from this reference point winery. Despite all of their success, the Di Napoli family continues to work towards improving quality. The estate has significantly reduced the amount of time the Sammarco and d’Alceo spend in oak to 12 months and dropped new oak levels down to around 1/3rd, while holding the wines back longer in bottle, all decisions that are allowing the fruit from these phenomenal sites to be incredibly expressive and delineated. With the 2009s, some of the wines are fermented in cement. Back to the future? Perhaps, but there is no denying the superb quality of the estate’s top 2007s. These are dazzling wines by any measure.

Score: 97 Robert Parker (RP), The Wine Advocate (WA), August 2011

Savory and rich, with lots of beautiful fruit. Full and velvety tannins. Long and intense. Loads going on. Makes you want to drink it.

Score: 95 James Suckling (JS), JamesSuckling.com, September 2011

The 2007 Sammarco is a real stunner. Deep, concentrated and explosive to the core, the 2007 boasts remarkable richness and intensity. Here the feeling is of glycerin weight and a demi-glace-like sense of unctuosity. Smoke, tobacco, mint and black stone fruit meld into the expressive finish. The 2007 is just beginning to show the early signs of aromatic development, but it has more than enough depth to drink well for many, many years.
