This is appealingly super-fresh with its cool array of red currant, plum, earth and soft wisps of violet and lavender. The supple, round and utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors possess a really lovely mouthfeel thanks to the relatively fine-grained tannins that also shape the punchy, dusty and serious finale. I like the sense of harmony and this notably complex effort should be easily capable of rewarding 10 to 12 years of cellaring and holding for much longer.

The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru offers a pure, quite precise bouquet with blackberry, briary, crushed stone and iris aromas that gently unfold. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit on the entry, crisp acidity, lightly spiced with hints of curry leaf and white pepper furnishing the persistent finish. This is very classy, though maybe not quite as long-term as I estimated out of barrel. Tasted at the Domaine.

Aromas of cassis, dark plums, baking chocolate and rosehip introduce the 2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale, a full-bodied, rich and layered wine with a broad-shouldered chassis of fine, stony tannins that are entirely enveloped in fleshy, gourmand fruit. This vintage is atypically rich and concentrated, so it´s hard to predict if and when it will shut down.

Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier and his team have produced some of the wines of the 2017 vintage in the Côte de Nuits, and this was among the most thrilling of some two hundred domaine visits. Mugnier´s pure, ethereal style has captured all the succulence and potential elegance of the year, but the wines also possess uncommon depth and intensity. The Musigny is predictably brilliant, a yardstick against which to measure others, but it is also worth singling out the Bonnes-Mares to readers that may not be paying attention, since the last few vintages of this cuvée rank as the best Mugnier has so far produced: as the vines mature, he says, it´s becoming "more Chambolle" in character, and evidently that is no bad thing. Note that the Musigny itself will not be released for several years, as Mugnier continues to hold back the wine to prevent its premature consumption.
