Once again an exceptionally fresh and bright nose mixes ultra-pure red berry aromas with those of spice, tea, lilac and rose petal notes. The mouth feel is notably finer than that of the Clos des Chênes as the mid-palate is supple yet the gorgeously textured backend tightens up considerably and displays superb intensity on the very firm and well-balanced finish. It´s rare that the Clos du Château des Ducs matches the Clos des Chênes qualitatively but it may well in 2017. Either way, this is terrific.

The 2017 Volnay Clos du Château des Ducs is completely de-stemmed by hand this year, which took just over 30 hours according to Frédéric Lafarge. It has a very pure bouquet with redcurrant, wild strawberry, crushed stone and light rose petal aromas, more feminine than the Clos des Chênes but just as captivating. The palate is packed full of energy and vivacity, superb tension running from start to finish with the mineralitéflooding across the entrancing finish. Outstanding. Very pure and given that nascent energy, a long-term prospect.

Destemmed entirely by hand, the 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs offers up a lovely bouquet of cassis, blackberries, earthy forest floor and grilled game bird. On the palate, it´s medium to full-bodied, ample and generous, with the richest, most gourmand profile of the premiers crus in the Lafarge cellar, structured around beautifully refined tannins and concluding with a long, generous finish.
The 2017 is a lovely success for the Domaine Michel Lafarge, one of the great estates of the Côte de Beaune. As usual, these are elegant and classically proportioned wines, cut from quite old-fashioned cloth. The suppleness and purity of fruit that characterize the vintage at its best are on evidence, and the domaine´s lower appellations will drink well in their youth, but the emblematic wines will emphatically reward bottle age. Indeed, to my palate, it´s only with time that these soulful Volnays reveal the true extent of their quality. Lafarge followers will find stylistic parallels with both 2007 and 2000. And thankfully, despite some spring frost, this is a comparatively generous crop for a domaine beset with below-average harvests for the better part of a decade.
