This is also overtly spicy with a fresh, earthy and cool nose that consists primarily of dark currants. There is good punch to the suave and very round flavors that somehow manage to retain a good sense of detail on the attractively complex, lingering and well-balanced finale. Lovely.

Sweet and perfumed in the glass, Bachelet´s 2012 Côte de Nuits-Villages flows across the palate with hints of tobacco, dried, flowers, licorice, mint and savory herbs. Denis Bachelet´s small cellar is stark for how empty the barrel room is. In 2012 yields are down from 30% to more than 50% for the Charmes. According to Bachelet mildew in May and bad weather during the flowering were the main culprits. Flowering was drawn out over an entire month, whereas in a normal year everything is said and done in about a week. If that wasn´t bad enough, the oldest vines were a!ected the most by the dismal weather. As is the custom here, the wines were racked before the malos, something that is done largely because of space considerations. Even though the malos were quite late the 2012s showed beautifully. This is a gorgeous set of wines from Denis Bachelet. The heartbreak is likely to be in trying to find them.

The 2012 Côte de Nuits Villages comes from almost a hectare of vines in Brochon on the slopes that naturally produce small berries and ripens late. Always one of my favourite wines from Denis Bachelet, it has beguiling, natural brambly black fruit on the nose with briary and wild hedgerow. The palate is elegant and refined with supple tannins, perfectly judged acidity and finesse that would not look out of place in a premier cru. It just lacks a modicum of persistence - but you will not care about that because you will be too busy looking for another bottle.
