A deft but still perceptible dollop of wood can be found on the ripe and very fresh nose of poached plum, black raspberry and plenty of sauvage nuances. The texture of the broad-shouldered flavors is also quite sleek with a relatively supple mid-palate that contrasts with the firm, youthfully austere and structured finale that displays huge length and ample minerality. This is also very much built to reward long-term cellaring and here too I would strongly suggest not touching a bottle for at least ten years. This is brilliant.

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru has the most stylish bouquet: beautifully- defined dark cherry, blueberry and sous-bois scents, the finest mineralité (even more than the Les Saint- Georges this year.) The palate is taut and linear, lots of energy and tension with an almost clinical precision towards the saline finish. Sophisticated and tender. Superb.

Aromas of cassis, woodsmoke, wild berries, loamy soil, orange rind and spices introduce the 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains, a full-bodied, layered and velvety wine that´s deep, concentrated and elegantly muscular, with lively acids and rich, powdery structuring tannins. As usual, it´s built for the long haul.
The 2020 vintage has turned out very well indeed at Domaine Robert Chevillon. With finished alcohols around 13.7% to 13.9%, these are deep and powerful wines that remain nicely balanced, and they´re built to age. Indeed, in their vibrant, concentrated style, they remind me somewhat of the domaine´s 2016s, something one wouldn´t have thought possible on paper. The bad news is that yields were down, the Chevillon brothers having lost the equivalent of one entire harvest over the course of the 2019, 2020 and 2021 vintages. As I´ve written before, this is one of my favorite addresses in all of Burgundy. Old vines, cultivated soils, moderate yields and long fermentations with entirely destemmed grapes are the order of the day at this address, with the Nuits-Saint-Georges Vieilles Vignes seeing some 20% new oak and the premiers crus 30%. Nuits´ Tonnellerie Sirugue is the dominant supplier of barrels.
